By 1799, George Washington had become one of the largest whiskey producers in the United States. Today we continue the tradition of producing whiskey as well as other small batch distilled spirits at our historic distillery. 375ml bottles of the distilled spirits produced at Mount Vernon are also available for purchase at the Shops at Mount Vernon.

With this documentary evidence from 1797, we decided to make what would have been called "corn whiskey" in Washington's time. In reality, we are following the bourbon rules, which are codified in law. It is in fact a wheated bourbon, with the mash bill being 70% corn, 20% wheat and 10% malted barley.

For a detailed printable recipe refer to the recipe card at the end of the blog post. Place the fresh cherries and sugar in a glass jar with lid; mix. Add Bourbon; stir together. Seal the jar. Place in a cool dark place. Stir daily to dissolve the sugar. Allow to sit for 3 months. Strain into a clean jar when done.
