Adam began remodeling Kenwood in 1767 for William Murray, the lord chief justice and first earl of Mansfield, who had purchased the house in 1754 as a weekend escape from central London. Murray instructed Adam to improve its external appearance, modernize the interior, and accommodate his great collection of books.
